(ALLENTOWN, PA) The Bar Association of Lehigh County in conjunction with the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation is pleased to announce a $20,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to address cyber safety issues as they pertain to social networking sites (i.e. Facebook, Myspace, etc.).
The organizations will collaborate to create a multi-media presentation, DVD Production and Website, entitled OneFace(dot)Me. This electronic media will then be distributed to all middle schools throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley. It is expected to reach over 12,000 students.
"With the growing use of social networking platforms, it's vital that we reach out to this group and teach the dangers and the legalities of social networking sites." noted Bar Association of Lehigh County President Theodore J. Zeller III. "We must give kids, parents and educators the tools they need to protect themselves not only in the real world but in the virtual world."
"Our children are growing up in a digital world. It is how they communicate, learn and share ideas," said Daniel J. Reavy, Director-External Affairs with Verizon Pennsylvania. "Online technology has had a tremendous impact on our society, and its role will continue to grow with further advances. Verizon is proud to partner with the Bar Association of Lehigh County and the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation to educate and empower students, parents and teachers in the Greater Lehigh Valley to enjoy a safe experience while on the internet."
The Bar Association of Lehigh County will post an accompanying lesson plan for teachers on OneFace(dot)Me citing appropriate national and state academic standards. There will also be a downloadable "Pledge" for teachers to distribute to their students. Teachers in the Greater Lehigh Valley who get 100% participation will be entered into a contest for a pizza party. One teacher will receive a pizza party for his/her class. Additionally, three students will be given the chance to win three $100 U.S. Savings Bonds for a poster contest associated with the website.
Expected completion date for OneFace(dot)Me is Spring 2010.
